Camp America FAQ
How much are my flights going to cost?
This depends on where you are placed in the US and what you are planning on doing after camp. All of these things alter the prices. Here are a couple of examples:
2008 Return to NYC: $2449 & taxes approx $90
2008 Fly into NYC and out of LA: $2199 & taxes approx $90
When do I have to pay?
If you use the special Air NZ Camp airfare you pay a $100 deposit and then you have up to 30 days before departure to pay the balance. You can pay amounts weekly etc. and any amount that suits you.
With other airfares it depends on their 'rules' but we will let you know any payment dates when you make your booking.
What are the ways that I can pay for my flights?
We accept cash, cheque, credit cards, internet banking & eftpos. There is a fee with credit card transactions.
What are the costs for date changes?
For the special camp fares with Air NZ - before you leave you get one date change free of charge and after that the cost is at least $50 - the price can go up if you are re-routing your flights or if there are none of the special seats left.
Other airfares have their own date change fees and these range from $50 upwards.
Can I change where I leave from?
Yes you can but if you have paid for a higher fare - eg been ticketed NYC return and then want to come out of LA you just pay $50 but if you are wanting to come out of eg Miami instead of NYC or San Fran instead of LA then the price is at least $250 but we can do it!
Are there tours to do after camp?
There are plenty of tours that you can do before & after camp. We give you a 10% discount with Trek America, 5% with Contiki USA.
What is Own Transport?
If you are an Own Transport (OT) participant you have opted to make your own flight arrangments to the USA and are not eligible for one of the free Camp America flights. Applicants from certain countries are automatically Own Transport eg Austalia & New Zealand.
Where is the Camp America hotel in New York?

How long is my J1 Visa valid for?
The J1 visa can be issued for up to 4 months work. You then have a 30 day grace period to use either after you finish camp to see the USA or you can use it to enter the USA before your visa starts.
(Info from the US Consulate - subject to change)
Can I travel out of the USA to Canada or Mexico?
Yes you can as long as it is not during the 30 day grace period of your J1 Visa. If you are planning on visiting these places you need to make sure that you are back in the US while your J1 is valid. Also you need to get a Travel Validation Signature from the Camp America US office as this signature verifies that you are still in good standing on the programme.
You need to send your DS-2019 form to the following address:
Camp America - Travel Validation
9 West Broad Street
Stamford, CT 06902.
Mail your form at least two weeks prior to your trip & include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
(Info from Camp America Handbook - subject to change)
What insurance do I have?
You get your medical insurance through Camp America but if you have a pre-exisiting condition then we can do this for you. We also offer discounted insurance which covers loss baggage, travel delays, emergency baggage, missed connection just to name a few and this is really handy to have. The cost for this for 2009 is $175 for 5 months cover.
Can I go to London?
Of course - anywhere that you want to go we can price for you. Just let us know what you want and dates and we will give you a quote for this
Can I have a stopover?
Yes you can. Where you can have a stopover depends on your airfare but if you have a certain place that you may like to go then we can always suss this out for you. Most stopovers are in the Pacific Islands or Hawaii and possibly Oz. Usually there is no extra cost on the airfare - you just need to pay for your accommodation etc.
You are better to arrange your stopover when booking your tickets, as this keeps the price down. Otherwise if you want to do this later on then we need to reroute your flights and this can get expensive.
Are there sites where I can chat to other counsellers?
Yes - Camp America have a forum for new & returning counsellers click here
There is also a Camp America Bebo page that is slowing getting off the ground click here

Airfares
what are instant purchase airfares
Instant Purchase Airfares are usually the cheapest airfare available.
Instant purchase means that the airfare needs to paid for (and therefore ticketed as well) to be sure of getting the seat at that price.
We can book and 'hold' seats for you for a up to a day on some airlines BUT to be 100% certain of getting the cheapest airfare you should be prepared to book and pay at the same time so we can issue your ticket and then it's a done deal and the airfare is guaranteed.
Until the airfare is paid in full on these fares it could change.
